A man has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl he befriended on Facebook.
Gholahun Shittu, 24, of Kingswood Estate, Southwark SE21, raped the schoolgirl after adding her as a friend on Facebook.
In their online conversations, Shittu pestered the girl to meet him claiming he wanted to give her some money.
When she went to meet him at the Kingswood Estate in Dulwich during half-term in February 2014, Shittu took her to a nearby community centre and asked to have sex with her.
She refused but as she attempted to use her phone to make a call, Shittu then grabbed her around the neck and raped her.
“Shittu took advantage of a vulnerable and impressionable girl. He denied his actions throughout the investigation and pleaded not guilty at court,” Detective Constable Lisa Tame said.
She said she was happy that the court had found Shittu guilty, and expressed hope that the sentence would “reassure the victim and help her start the healing process.”
Shittu was also given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
