Petition asks ASDA to stop selling Ku Klux Klan style outfits

An online petition has been launched asking ASDA supermarkets to stop selling a white hooded England flag which resembles a Ku Klux Klan costume.

Ku Klux Klan“Horrifically despite complaints from customers ASDA have refused to remove the flag. It is of great concern that the flag even passed design and production and demonstrates a failure to carry out risk assessments and equality impact assessments,” says Zita Holbourne, Co-founder of Black Activists Rising Against Cuts (BARAC UK) who launched the petition.

Following the launch of the petition, “ASDA stated that individual store managers could withdraw the flag if complaints were received or they thought it might cause offence,” Ms Holbourne says. This, she adds, means they acknowledge there is a problem so they should have just withdrawn it all together.

The petition has already received the support of leading anti-racist and race equality organisations including BARAC UK, OBV, Coreplan, London Roots, One Society Many Cultures, Stand up to Racism and Unite Against Fascism.
