Benedict Cumberbatch: Black British actors do better in US than UK

26th January 2015: Benedict Cumberbatch has criticised the lack of opportunities for black British actors in the UK.

He said black British actors have a far better chance of success in Hollywood than the UK.

In an interview with US journalist Tavis Smiley, Mr Cumberbatch, 38, said black British actors such as Idris Elba and David Oyelowo do better in the US than back home.

The Sherlock star said: “I think as far as coloured actors go it gets really difficult in the UK, and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in the US] than in the UK and that’s something that needs to change.”

He praised comedian Lenny Henry for campaigning for more work for minorities in the UK. “He’s rightfully launched a campaign because something’s gone wrong,” Mr Cumberbatch said. “I don’t want to get involved in any debates about that, but it’s clear when you see certain migratory patterns that there are more opportunities here than there are in the UK.”
