“The Riots” showing at Bernie Grant Arts Centre

The critically acclaimed production “The Riots” will be showing at Tottenham’s Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC) from 4th to 14th January 2012.

From Tweets by taxi drivers to moment-by-moment accounts by riot police, “The Riots” builds a real-time picture of events as they unfolded. And then, from interviews with rioters, politicians, police, teachers, lawyers and community leaders, it analyses what happened, why it happened, and what we should do towards making a better future for ourselves and our city.

‘Talkback’ discussions with an array of invited guests will be held immediately after the performances on 4th, 6th, 9th, 11th and 13th January. The production’s writer Gillian Slovo will be there on the opening night (4th January) to talk about the show – with a distinguished panel.

The Riots at BGAC will also be accompanied by an Exclusive Photographic Exhibition by Don Omope, a local photographer and journalist who lives just off Tottenham High Street. He spent 12 hours taking photographs as the riots evolved. His collections of photographs are powerful and personal – and some of them have been purchased by the BBC for its archives. Don is exhibiting more than 60 photographs not yet published anywhere – and they provide an extraordinary visual essay.

Also on show will be a collection of over 60 massive photographs from “The Great Book of Tottenham” – a celebration of the wonderful diversity of Tottenham – from shopkeepers to ordinary people in the street.
