Steel Pan Trust hosts soloist competition for young people

Steel Pan Trust will host an event for Black History Month on 13th October 2013 at Flyover Portobello, 3 – 5 Thorpe Close, London W10 5XL.

The event titled Pan Clash will be held from 18.00 to 23.00.

Pan Clash is a soloist competition for Steel Pan musicians aged between 13 and 30.

Five young people will take part and they will be soloing to Nora Jones’ ‘Don’t Know Why’ and free-styling to an original piece of music that they will hear for the first time on the day of the event.

There will be three judges including Debi Gardner, the Secretary of the British Association of Steelbands (BAS).

The winning soloist will receive £500 prize, perform at the V.I.P reception at the 18th Anniversary MOBO Awards 2013, two tickets to the 18th Anniversary MOBO Awards 2013 and a certificate from the BAS.

Pan Clash was created by Steel Pan Agency Manager Shareen Gary.

The agency is composed of a team of up to 15 musicians who mainly provide workshops and performances at schools, private functions and corporate events. They have so far visited more than 200 schools.
