Muntu Valdo’s music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery.
His mesmerising solo set juxtaposes his raw, passionate voice and intensely emotive melodies with an ingenious use of loops, samples and effects.
His new Warners album “The One & The Many” is being released in April and will be launched in London at the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, before Muntu performs at festivals across the summer including WOMAD Adu Dhabi.
Before now he has played with some of the great names of African music including Ali Farka Touré, Manu Dibango and Congolese superstars Staff Benda Bilili, and explored exciting new collaborations in ventures like Damon Albarn’s Africa Express.
In May and June this year Muntu tours the UK with South African musical legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Ruby & The Vines are set to open Muntu’s album launch in Hoxton with an infectious cocktail of funk, jazz and beats.
Fronted by vocalist/bassist Binisa Bonner with guitarist Greg Sanders and drummer Ben Assiter, this hotly tipped trio present a cosmopolitan blend of influences as diverse as Congolese roots music, afro-beat, jazz and reggae, delivering their set with soulful vocal melodies and an unfalteringly meticulous groove.
