A 66 year old man who pleaded guilty to raping a three-year-old boy he was babysitting has been sentenced to life at Southwark Crown Court.
Barry John Britton of Westminster, was sentenced on 17th July 2014. He pleaded guilty to the following counts at the same venue on 9th May 2014: Count 1 – oral rape of boy under 13; Count 2 – oral rape of boy under 13 on occasions other than that referred to at charge 1; Count 3 – cause boy under 13 to engage in penetrative sexual activity; Count 4 – cause boy under 13 to engage in penetrative sexual activity other than referred to at charge 3.
Britton was given a life sentence with a minimum five year tariff, ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register for life. He was also made subject of a Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO).
From January 2014, Britton befriended a family in the Westminster area and managed to gain their trust to the extent that he was allowed to babysit their young son.
Detective Sergeant Tom Haines, of Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command (SOECA), said: “Barry John Britton is a predatory offender who befriended this family in order to abuse their child.
“Officers acted quickly and secured the evidence required to charge him with these serious offences. The family can now be assured that their son and other children are safe from this dangerous man and that he has been brought to justice.”
