Jewellery thief suspect leaves phone with his picture at scene of crime

Police in Kingston are looking for a suspected jewellery thief who left his phone, including a picture of himself, at the scene of a crime.

Germain Ibrahim Fofana

Detectives believe he may be linked to incidents at jewellery stores across London.

The latest shop targeted was Ernest Jones, Clarence Street, Kingston where the suspect ran out of the shop with £18,000 of jewellery.

However, in his speed to escape he left his phone behind which had his image as a screensaver, enabling police to identify him.

On 18th May 2014, the suspect, who police have identified as Germain Ibrahim Fofana, was posing as a customer interested in buying engagement rings for his female accomplice.

The pair entered the shop with a child in a buggy at about 13:45hrs. The suspect spoke to the shop assistant indicating they were interested in buying engagement rings.

The female then pointed out two rings she liked and wanted to look at. The couple then left the shop stating they were going to see jewellery at another store and would return later.

Approximately 30 minutes later the male suspect returned alone and asked the shop assistant who originally served him if he could look at both rings again as well as a wedding band.

He told the assistant that he wanted to compare the engagement rings with the wedding band to see which one it looked best with.

The shop assistant had no reason to believe the suspect was anything but genuine so she handed over the rings.

It was then the suspect ran out of the store with two engagement rings and the wedding ring, leaving behind his phone in a bag.

Detective Sergeant Damion Cummings from Kingston CID, said: “In his hurry to run out of the shop, the suspect left his mobile phone on the table alongside his bag. While police were on scene the phone lit up having received a text message and a picture of the suspect was saved as the background. It was then the shop assistant who served him was able to identify the person in the picture.”

DS Cummings said the 27-year-old suspect had been identified as a French national. “We also know he is wanted for further offences including shop-lifting, robbery and burglary across some other London boroughs,” he said.

Fofana is about 5ft 7ins. He has a French accent, is of slim build and has short black hair. He was last seen wearing a light blue shirt, grey suit trousers and boating shoes.

His female colleague is of large build and was wearing all black clothing. She had long black hair.
