Makoni: AU must strongly oppose Female Genital Mutilation

“A knife on such a delicate part of a girl’s body is barbaric”

Betty Makoni, a Zimbabwean activist has asked the African Union (AU) to strongly condemn and work hard to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the continent.

Ms. Betty Makoni, Founder and Director of Girl Child Network

“In West Africa traditionalists cut off the clitoris when girls are below 12. In Southern Africa traditionalists insist the clitoris be pulled out. What a contrast in their sex menu,” Ms. Makoni said. “But why has African Union not made it clear that a knife or razor blade or bottle on a male or female genital organ is fatal?”

Ms. Makoni is the Founder and Director of Girl Child Network (GCN) Zimbabwe. She is also Chief Executive Officer of Girl Child Network World Wide (GCNW). This is an organization that champions the rights of the girl child globally.

“Just wondering what would happen if we started cutting and pulling out male organs,” Ms. Makoni said. “If anyone gets cut on the arm or leg, it is a serious crime but when traditionalists cut clitoris it is OK,” Ms. Makoni observed.

“A knife on such a delicate part of a girl’s body is barbaric,” she added.
